For anyone interested in updating their old version of Doom II here are the latest official updates from id Software.

If you need to check which version of any IWAD you have, you can use this utility by Russell: http://russell.slipgate.org/iwadverifier.php

If you are incapable of running the original updates for whatever reason, here are some fan made patches. They are probably easier for everyone, you might even want to try them first. (Thanks chilvence): http://www.q-marine.de/wad-dat/downloads.htm

This file upgrades DOOM 2 version 1.666 (German) to DOOM 2 version 1.9.

Upgrades DOOM2 version 1.8 to DOOM2 version 1.9.

Upgrades DOOM2 version 1.7a to DOOM2 version 1.9.

This .zip file contains three patches for DOOM 2. All will
upgrade your current version of DOOM 2 to version 1.7a.

If you have:
Code:
Version          Dated           Use File
-------         -------         ----------
1.666           8-29-94         PATCHA.BAT
1.666           9-20-94         PATCHB.BAT
1.7             9-21-94         PATCHC.BAT

This patch file upgrades DOOM 2 v1.666 REGISTERED to DOOM 2 v1.7a.

This patch file upgrades DOOM 2 v1.7 REGISTERED to DOOM 2 v1.7a.

wouldn't this better as a wiki article, or at least a link to a doomwiki or doomworld article about patches?

I thought this might be helpful - for anyone who can't use the original id patches for any reason (perhaps maybe the fact that they were written for dos and segfault my machine...), someone went to the trouble to create some new ones:

http://www.q-marine.de/wad-dat/

They are in the downloads section, and require the bsdiff patching util to apply. The page also has a dat file for discerning which version you actually have, which works for clrmamepro
